What Is the Oldest Aquarium in Washington State?
Westport Aquarium
Westport Aquarium is the oldest aquarium in Washington State. It is family owned and built in 1957. The exhibits show local marine life and mammal education. There are fish and ducks to feed in the aquarium. This is a new favorite for children that visit. The area was home to five Harbor Seals and two Sea Lions at one time making it the most popular reason people visited. However, in 2012 the state Department of Agriculture decided the seals enclosure was not large enough and transferred the seals to New Mexico. The ducks now are the highlight of many.
The aquarium has interactive stations for kids to play and discover. They consist of coloring pages, sand, or soapy water with activities. There is also a “touch” station with starfish and sea urchins.
While in the aquarium look at the bones of a giant, 39-foot Gray Whale. It is a sight you must see. The gray whale had beached itself and later died on the shore. The owner of Westport Aquarium, Marc Myrsell, volunteered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries to dispose of the whale. He received permission to preserve and display the skeleton of the whale.
